4 steps for longer candle happiness - your candle guide at home

The candle guide at home. How does a candle last a long time and how do I properly care for my candle?

Who doesn't love candles?! The scent of them makes us dream, lets us relax or simply create a feel-good atmosphere at home. For us, candles are a nice addition to any yoga home studio. They bring a great smell, create a calming and pleasant atmosphere and bring us that certain feeling of cosiness, especially in winter.

Candles at home yoga practice

We know from experience that many yogis follow their own rituals before or during yoga practice. Candles are also often an integral part of this.

Yogacito tip:  Light a candle before each practice or develop your own ritual. Repetition before doing yoga helps you to get in the right mood and sends the message to your body and mind: It's time for yoga. Your head and body magically prepare for the sequence ahead.

So it can happen that you need a new candle every month. Since we know that handmade candles that are made with high quality materials can be a bit more expensive, we show you how to get the best out of candles so that you can use them as long as possible.

How you can use your candle for a particularly long time.

With the goal of being able to use the candles at home or during yoga practice for a particularly long time, we have put together 4 tips so that you have even more of your beloved candles. It doesn't matter whether your candle is made from soy, beeswax or rapeseed wax (due to their harmful effects on the human body, we advise against using paraffin candles), these tips will help you enjoy your candle even longer. So let's start:

Step 1: The first lighting

The first lighting is critical to the life of your candle. To do this, make sure the candle burns down the first time until the wax melts as evenly as possible down to the sides of the jar. The smaller the margin, the better. Depending on the size of the candle and the wax used, this will take a few hours, but this way you will prevent tunneling later. For candles like them at Yogacito in the shop for example, we recommend leaving the candle to burn for about 4 hours the first time it is lit.

Step 2:Trimming the wick

Trim the wick of your candle each time you light it. It is best to keep the length of the wick at around 8mm - 10mm in length. This will prevent the wick from mushrooming to prevents unnecessary soot and flickering of the candle. The wick also regulates the size of the flame. With a smaller flame, your candle will burn even longer. A great win-win situation.

Step 3: Soot removal

Soot is often a sign that something is wrong with your candle. If soot forms on the inside of the candle vessel, it is best to turn the candle out again and see whether your wick is the right length (see step 2) and the candle is not accidentally in a draft. After the candle has cooled, you can wipe off the soot on the inside with a clean, damp cloth. After that, your candle is beautiful again and you will light it more often one or the other time.

Step 4: Clean wax basin

So that your candle burns evenly and less flickering and soot, you should always keep the wax basin clean. We all know these little wick remains, the remains of the match and this fine layer of dust when we haven't lit our candle for a long time. Most particles can easily be removed with a damp cloth or a brush. The candle simply burns evenly and for a long time, so that you can enjoy it for a long time.
